Storage News : Samsung SSD Receives CMVP FIPS Validation for Providing High Level of Data Security

SEOUL, Korea - January 5, 2012 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a global leader in advanced semiconductor technology solutions, announced today that its PM810 solid-state drives (SSDs) attained Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) validation for conformance to the National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 based on the drives' heightened data security. The CMVP is a joint program between NIST and the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC).

Samsung's PM810 SSDs validation for NIST FIPS 140-2, a set of robust and widely acknowledged cryptography requirements was the result of their ensuring a high level of data protection. The SSDs' data security solution features self-encrypting drive (SED) technology that utilizes the 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) built into the Samsung-developed controller hardware. Key management and security policies are implemented internally through the drive's firmware.

"With what is apparently the first FIPS 140-2 validation for an SSD, Samsung's SSDs solidify their position as one of the best storage solutions in the world, in satisfying high security requirements, as well as meeting demanding performance and reliability needs," said Myungho Kim, vice president of memory marketing, Device Solutions, Samsung Electronics. "Samsung will help the premium SSD market continue to grow rapidly by providing significant product differentiation, as its SSDs extend their feature set, their usability and their breadth of applications," he added.

The SSD's 'Crypto Erase' technology deletes targeted data in a couple of seconds regardless of the overall volume of data or the capacity of the SSD involved. Also, the technology prevents any attempt to restore deleted data or to read data off of NAND flash chips disassembled from the drive.

This heightened level of security is crucial for many, especially for business applications where rapid and thorough erasing of sensitive data is needed, such as when discarding worn computing equipment or switching storage drives. Enabling rapid, exacting data deletion, Samsung's SSDs make it easier for businesses or public offices to manage and even extend the life of large-scale computing systems and other networked PCs. The self-encrypting feature also protects the host device against unauthorized access when lost or stolen.

Samsung recently applied its distinctive security solution to its newest SSD. The company intends to keep working on delivering even higher levels of data security with its high-performance SSD products in the future.

Storage News : Samsung SSD Self-Encryption Provides Highest Level of Protection against Data Loss

Samsung has only SSD to feature Government-Grade AES 256-bit Encryption for Heightened Security

San Jose, CA - November 23, 2010 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today said its new solid-state drive (SSD) with built-in hardware encryption provides the highest level of protection against unauthorized access to sensitive information on a lost or stolen laptop. The new Samsung SSD is also light, rugged and reliable, adding to its usefulness for today's traveling professionals and others using corporate PCs.

"Faster and more secure than its predecessor, our new corporate-focused SSD is the only one with self-encryption built on TCG's Opal standard that's available on the market today," said Jim Elliott, Vice President, Memory Marketing and Product Planning, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.

The loss of sensitive information as a result of a misplaced or stolen laptop is a growing concern. Beyond impacting a company's reputation and credibility, such occurrences can result in steep financial penalties. The financial impact is up to $200 per lost record, including costs of customer notification and legal fees.

The Samsung SSD features advanced hardware-based self-encryption to protect confidential data from unauthorized access. This security capability is based on the industry's leading Trusted Computing Group's Opal standard and features stronger 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) keys. The hardware encryption is always on, and both the data encryption and user authentication are performed in the high security of the drive controller, rather than being stored in software. Software encryption performs encryption using the main CPU of the PC and stores protected data in the insecure memory of the system; in contrast, self-encrypting drives (SEDs) encrypt data at interface speed with no impact on performance within the protected hardware of the SSD.

In fact, a research report on Samsung's self-encrypting SSD, "Full Drive Encryption with Samsung Solid State Drives," was released by Trusted Strategies earlier this month showing superior performance for a system equipped with a self-encrypting SSD over others using software encryption. As noted in the white paper, test results showed that a notebook PC system equipped with a self-encrypting SSD attained a 2.4 times higher level of overall performance than an SSD with software encryption and 3.7 times higher performance level than an HDD with software encryption (see graph below).

Key drive attributes include:• AES encryption capability extended to 256 bit keys • Firmware in the drive can be securely updated• In the process of attaining FIPS 140-2 certification. FIPS 140-2 is a set of widely acknowledged cryptography requirements issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

The Samsung SSD supports a variety of management software. SSD's self-encryption and management software work together as essential parts of a fully managed hardware-based encryption solution. Among client software that Samsung SSD supports is EMBASSY® Trusted Drive Manager from Wave Systems (NASDAQ:WAVX). It provides backup and recovery for user passwords; manages advanced security settings; and enables pre-boot authentication and single sign-on to Windows®.

"Samsung continues to pioneer the field of flash-based storage devices, and there's no better evidence of this than its new self-encrypting SSDs," said Brian Berger, Wave's Executive Vice President of Marketing & Sales.

Besides its security advantages, the Samsung SSD for corporate PCs provides sequential read/write speeds of up to 250/220 MB/s, and weighs 25 percent less than most traditional HDDs, providing a powerful combination of security, performance and convenience for corporate users on the go.

Storage News : Samsung Announces its First Internal Blu-ray Disc Combo Drive With World's Fastest 8X Read Speed

Seoul, Korea, October 8, 2009: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a worldwide leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology, has launched its first internal Blu-ray disc COMBO drive for PCs, the SH-B083, with large capacities of up to 25GB for a single layer disc and 50GB for a double layer disc. Building upon the company's ODD leadership, the new Blu-ray drive reads at up to 8x, the world's fastest speed, reads CDs at up to 40x, and reads DVDs at up to 16x.

With Samsung's fast dual layer jumping algorithm, the new SH-B083 COMBO drive features an average access speed of 350ms which is much faster than any other drive on the market. The new drive reads Blu-ray discs and reads and writes CD/DVDs.

"Expanding the HD content experience for PC users, Blu-ray technology offers consumers a lot of advantages over traditional ODD technology," said Jinsoo Lee, the vice president of Samsung Optical Disc Drive division strategic marketing team. "With Samsung's new BD drive, users can not only watch HD movies on their PC but they can also record HDTV broadcasting on to a DVD with the bundled software Cyberlink Powerproducer. They also can record and burn HD camcorder movies to a DVD disc with Powerproducer."

The higher precision Blu-ray technology dictates the need for more advanced reliability features to ensure HD viewing. The new SH-B083 is equipped with two lenses for more stable reading and writing: one lens for BD read and the other lens for CD/DVD read/write. SACT (Spherical Abberation Compensation Technology) improves reading quality on a BD disc whose protective layer does not have a uniform thickness. Also, PSCT (Precision Step Control Technology) accommodates the higher resolution in the OPU position control system that the smaller track pitch of BD demands.

For more precise BD disc reading, Samsung's drive includes a four point skew adjustment instead of the typical three point skew found in regular DVD writers. For increased thermal reliability, an optical pickup lens cooling system reduces heat buildup.

The new eco-friendly drive features low power consumption and an aerodynamic frame design to lower acoustic noise by preventing pressure concentration in several areas of the bezel and door.

Samsung has designed its BD drive with an edgier look that sets it apart from other ODD drives. The front bezel of the internal BD drive, including the chic mirror front door design and blue LED, are appealing to consumers who consider design an important factor. The lighter weight not only reduces internal heat but also contributes to lower CO₂emissions by improving loading efficiency.

With Cyberlink TrueTheater software, users can upscale a DVD resolution movie to full HD resolution. Users can check to see if their PC is ready for BD by using the Cyberlink BD advisor in the bundled disc and on the Cyberlink homepage. Like all the other Samsung ODD drives, the BD drive supports Firmware Live Update which allows users to ensure they always have the latest BD Drive firmware version.

The SH-B083 is available in November in the US with a $110.00 MSRP through retail and eRetail channels like amazon.com and newegg.com.

Storage News : Samsung Showcases New External Hard Drives at IFA 2009

Berlin, Germany, September 3, 2009 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology, today announced two new editions to its S Series external hard drive line up; the 3.5-inch 2TB (Terabyte) S3 Station and the 640 Gigabyte (GB) 2.5-inch S2 portable. These two new family members strengthen Samsung’s external drive portfolio of 1.8", 2.5" and 3.5" drives, thereby widening the choice of reliable portable storage solutions for customers. Samsung’s hard drive line up, including S2 Portable 640GB, S1 Mini and STORY Station will be demonstrated in Hall 20 at IFA.

"As consumer demands continue to escalate for storing personal data, music and video files, Samsung has expanded its extensive family of external hard drives to support the growing personal storage market," said Cheol-hee Lee, vice president of marketing, Storage Systems Division, Samsung Electronics. "The new drives provide users with a sleek design and high-density choices in both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form factors."

Originally only available in capacities up to 500GB, the new edition to the S2 Portable lineup at 640GB capacity can store data equivalent to 128,000 digital images, 160,000 MP3 music files, or 77 hours of high definition movies. According to IDC, 500GB and greater densities will comprise more than 50 percent of 2.5-inch external drives in 2010. Samsung now provides a broad choice of 2.5" drives spanning from 160GB to 640GB densities.

Designed for large data file back-up of desktop PCs, the 3.5-inch S3 Station is available in up to 2-Terabyte (TB) data storage capacity and comes in a classic piano black glossy casing with a space-saving footprint to conserve desk space. Pointing to the increasing popularity of 3.5-inch high density drives, IDC reported that the 1/1.5TB 3.5-inch drive was the mainstream density in the first half of 2009, as the 500GB market contracted.

Both new hard drives offer the same security features in other S2 Portable and S1 Mini drives, such as Auto Backup, SecretZone™, and SafetyKey™.

The high 640GB density S2 Portable features a high-speed USB 2.0 interface and receives power supply through its main USB port for added user convenience. By eliminating the additional circuit board on the hard drive when implementing the USB interface, Samsung 2.5" external drives offer an optimized footprint which is 17 percent smaller than conventional 2.5" external hard drives. Furthermore, the new compact design results in reduced failure rates and less power consumption owing to simplified electrical hardware.

The 640GB S2 Portable is available in September and the S3 Station will be available early next year.

Storage News : Samsung Introduces High-Capacity 250 Gigabyte 1.8" Hard Drives

Seoul, Korea - July 8, 2009 - Strengthening its line up of portable 1.8" hard drives for external storage markets, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced its 250 Gigabyte (GB) 1.8 inch hard disk drive, the Spinpoint N3U which incorporates a native USB controller on its printed circuit board. This optimized design results in a smaller foot print, less power consumption and optimized performance, which is ideal for portable external storage devices. The Spinpoint N3U stores up to 125 Gigabytes per platter for a total 250GB data storage capacity.

Most external hard drives require the addition of a bridge circuit board to convert the hard drive's PATA interface into a USB interface. Samsung's N3U drive, however, uses a native USB interface and as such does not require this bridge board.

"The new high-capacity 1.8" 250GB drive enhances Samsung's product offerings and is ideal for consumers who require a small form factor, high capacity data storage," said Choel-Hee Lee, vice president of marketing Storage System Division, Samsung Electronics. "It is easy to carry around and it is designed to withstand a free fall drop of up to 50 centimeters and be resistant to a maximum shock incident of up to 1500G."

As a native USB interface device, the Spinpoint N3U eliminates possible points of failure due to loose cable connections and optimizes performance by eliminating the interrupt service time for the bridge board to convert PATA to USB signals. And the N3U 1.8" drive also consumes about 40 percent less power than a 2.5" hard drive of an equivalent capacity.

Samsung now ships industry leading areal density levels for all of its hard disk form factor products with up to 1.5 Terabyte for 3.5" drives, 500GB for 2.5" drives and 250GB for 1.8" drives. The Spinpoint N3U comes in 120-, 160-, 200- and 250-GB capacities, the disk rotation speed is 3600rpm, and it supports a USB 2.0 interface. The drives are equipped with an 8MB cache memory. Initial shipments to OEMs are scheduled from mid-July with a MSRP at $199.00.

Storage News : Samsung's External DVD Writer Family Posts Strong Sales due to Netbook Sales Boom

Seoul, Korea, June 1, 2009: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a worldwide leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology, reported record sales for its slim external WriteMasterTM DVD writers amid a global economic recession. The monthly sales volume of slim external DVD writers, which has tripled from last October, is linked to the rise in netbook sales.

'The netbook is a streamlined economical PC with limited storage capability, designed for mobility and Internet access," said Jin-soo Lee, vice president of Samsung's Optical Disk Drive (ODD) marketing division. 'Netbook consumers often need an external disk drive, such as a Samsung external DVD writer, for disc booting and installation of application software from CDs or DVDs.

Samsung has two different types of slim external DVD writers: the SE-S084, which is a slot-in DVD writer and the SE-T084, a tray-type DVD writer.

The SE-S084 slot-in writer series adopts a single interconnect cable for both data transmission and power supply through a single USB port. The slim DVD writer weighs less than one pound (0.4kg), making it easy to carry as a portable device. The SE-S084 DVD writer features a sleek glossy surface design and is available in wide range of colors (black, white, silver, blue, red, sky-blue, and pink) to match the various netbook and notebook PC colors.

Samsung's SE-T084 DVD writer features TruDirect TM, which allows consumers to create DVDs and burn digital content through a PC without the need for data to be stored on the hard drive. Compared to using a hard disk drive as an intermediary step to transfer data to DVD writers, the TruDirect SE-T084M dramatically decreases the time it takes to create DVDs, eliminating pre-mastering, multiplexing or hard-disk buffering. The DVD writer also supports LightScribe, a direct disc labeling function.

Samsung's family of WriteMaster external DVD writers boasts many performance-enhancing features; including SAT (Speed Adjustment Technology); TAC (Tilt Actuator Compensation) and Double OPC (Optimum Power Control). In addition, Buffer Under Run Free Technology supports stable writing under high speed, and Magic Speed and ABS (Automatic Ball Balancing System) technologies reduce vibration and noise.

Both slim external DVD writers are available through retail channels.

Storage News : Samsung Adds Three High-Speed Models to Super-WriteMaster™ DVD Burner Lineup

San Jose, CA - October 7, 2008 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the worldwide digital consumer electronics and information technology leader, today announced shipment of three new DVD burners in the Super-WriteMaster™ SH-S223 series. In addition to the SH-S223F DVD burner announced earlier this year, Samsung is now shipping the SH-S223Q SATA drive and the SH-S222A and SH-S222L PATA drives. The three drives share the same industry-best 22X writing speeds of approximately 29.7 megabytes per second.

The SH-S223Q is a SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) drive with embedded LightScribe™ technology that lets users easily engrave labels, photos, and designs directly onto DVDs and CDs. LightScribe engraving produces a professional look without the cost and hassle of printing labels. The label-making software is pre-loaded on the drive and offers a variety of designs and label layouts.

The new SH-S222A and SH-S222L drives are optimized for the PC upgrade market since they have a PATA (Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment) interface. Although a majority of new computers are shipped with a SATA interface, a significant portion of consumers with older computer models are looking to upgrade their slower drives. These new PATA drives offer the speed of a leading-edge drive with the compatibility required for mature PC models. Similar to the SH-S223Q, the SH-S222L drive is equipped with LightScribe technology.

The SH-S222 and SH-S223 product lines deliver powerful over-speed recording, enabling consumers to burn data at high speeds – even faster than the speed indicated on a disc. With this technology, users can write at 22X speeds on 16X media and 12X speeds on 8X media. Since lower-speed media is more cost effective, the over-speed recording allows the consumer to save money while burning discs at faster speeds.

The SH-S223 drives provide industry-leading recording speeds across a wide range of data media types including:

  • 22X DVD±R recording
  • 12X DVD-RAM recording
  • 16X DVD+R Dual Layer recording
  • 12X DVD-R Dual Layer recording
  • 8X DVD+RW recording
  • 6X DVD-RW recording

Consumers can burn 4.7 gigabytes on a DVD±R disc in approximately four minutes and 26 seconds, a 6 percent increase in speed compared to a 20X DVD writer. It also takes less than 12 minutes to burn 4.7 gigabytes in DVD-RAM format, which is a 30 percent increase in speed over a 20X DVD drive.

Samsung's high-performance DVD writers are built on an aerodynamic frame design that reduces air-borne noise by preventing pressure concentration in any specific area of the drive. Their sound level ranges from 28 decibels (idle, at 3,400 rpm) to 53 decibels (22X, at 12,700 rpm), which is well within the general sound levels in the average home or office of 40 decibels to 65 decibels.

"The acoustic noise level has become an important factor that consumers consider when buying a PC or its peripherals" said Richard Aguilera, national sales manager for Samsung's Optical Disk Drive Business. "Samsung's DVD writers operate quietly with normal noise levels, even at the world's fastest speed of 22X. Samsung plans to continue developing its proprietary technology to lower noise levels."

As with the SH-S223F and the rest of Samsung's WriteMaster optical disc drive line, the three new drives feature technology that optimizes drive performance including SAT (Speed Adjustment Technology), TAC (Tilt Actuator Compensation) and Double OPC (Optimum Power Control). Buffer Under Run Free technology supports stable writing under high speed, and Magic Speed5 and ABS (Automatic Ball Balancing System) technologies reduce vibration and noise. All of the SH-S222 and SH-S223 drives are RoHS compliant.

Storage News : LEADING HARD DRIVE MANUFACTURERS TO PROMOTE HYBRID TECHNOLOGY THROUGH NEW ALLIANCE

STORAGE VISIONS 2007 CONFERENCE, January 4, 2007 -- In a move to give the growing number of notebook PC users faster, more durable systems that run longer on a battery charge, Hitachi*, Samsung, Seagate Technology and Toshiba have formed the Hybrid Storage Alliance. The goals of the industry group are two-fold: (1) illustrate how flash memory/hard drive hybrid technology can extend the capabilities of today’s notebook computers and (2) accelerate market adoption of the technology.

Market research firm IDC predicts hybrid hard disk drives will constitute 35 percent of all hard disk drives shipped with portable PCs by 2010 (1).

Hybrid hard drive technology is the industry’s answer to growing demand for notebook PCs that deliver the speed and durability of desktop PCs. Hybrid technology, which can be deployed in other mobile devices and computing systems, combines the unmatched capacity and cost-effectiveness of hard drives with the responsiveness, power-efficiency and durability of flash memory.

“The hard drive industry is continuously looking for ways to bring greater value to the systems in which our technology resides and to those who use them,” said Joni Clark, chairperson, Hybrid Storage Alliance. “Adding non-volatile memory to the hard drive brings about a host of mobility benefits that increases the value users want in notebook PCs – longer battery life, faster response, greater system durability.”

“NAND caching will emerge as an important technology enabler, especially to improve the performance of portable PCs running the Windows Vista OS,” said John Rydning, IDC’s Research Manager for hard drives. “Hybrid hard drives combine the best features of two storage technologies in a single product to deliver high capacity, responsive storage for portable PC users. Formation of the Hybrid Storage Alliance by HDD industry participants is prudent to raise awareness of hybrid HDD technology benefits.”

The Power of Hybrid
Microsoft Windows Vista is the first operating system to take full advantage of the performance, power and durability benefits of hybrid technology.

“Microsoft is pleased to see the storage industry uniting to drive the adoption of hybrid hard drives,” said Bill Mitchell, Corporate Vice President of Mobile and Tailored Platform Division of Microsoft. “Hybrid drives will leverage ‘Windows ReadyDrive’ features in Windows Vista to enable a new generation of mobile PCs that boot up and resume from hibernation faster, optimize battery life, outperform standard hard disk drives, and are more reliable and robust.”

End users of notebook systems can look for the following potential benefits of hybrid hard drives:

  • Faster boot-up and resume – Once a notebook PC with a traditional drive is turned on, the hard drive’s platters must spin up before boot-up can begin. Booting straight from a flash memory chip eliminates this delay. Likewise, hybrid drives resume operation from hibernation faster than traditional models, since frequently accessed data is stored in the NAND flash before a system goes to sleep.

  • Lower power consumption – Hybrid drives curtail platter spin time, which reduces power draw. This, in turn, extends battery life, especially important in notebook PCs and other mobile applications.

  • Higher reliability – Reducing platter spin time extends drive life.

  • Greater durability – Every time data is pulled from the flash memory, the system has greater shock tolerance because the drive platter isn’t spinning.
From a system standpoint, there are several advantages of hybrid hard drive technology over similar approaches, including:
  • Ease of installation – Incorporating flash memory directly onto the hard drive greatly simplifies installation and does not require additional real estate on the host system. Furthermore, installing hybrid drives in Windows Vista systems is as simple as installing traditional drives.

  • Data separation/data security – Having flash on the hard drive keeps all the system information stored in one location so that security or encryption mechanisms can be employed to protect all the data centrally. Storing data on the hard drive also helps with data recovery in case of a sudden system shut-down.
Association Activities
Members of the Hybrid Storage Alliance will be demonstrating hybrid technology and products at StorageVisions 2007, January 6 and 7 at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas.

Storage News : Samsung Showcases Industry's Most Advanced Suite of 2.5" Disk Drives

New York, NY -- June 19, 2007 - Samsung Electronics Ltd., the worldwide digital consumer electronics and information technology leader, is showcasing its hard disk drive leadership with the industry's most advance line up of 2.5" Hard Disk Drives covering consumer, commercial and enterprise applications. Samsung's new 2.5" hard drives are being introduced today at the company's storage press conference in New York City.

Samsung's new 2.5" family includes the MH80 Series, the world's first hybrid hard drive offered in 160GB capacity, the Spinpoint M5 Series with single-disk capacities ranging between 60GB and 160GB, and a dual-disk model provides up to 250GB of storage space. All of these models are shipping now.

"The 2.5" hard drive market is one of the hottest growing segments of the storage industry with double-digit annual growth, and we expect at least a twenty-percent growth increase in 2007," said Andy Higginbotham, Director of Hard Drive Sales and Marketing, Samsung Semiconductor. "With 2.5" hard disk drives rapidly moving beyond notebook PCs to include consumer electronics, automotive, and enterprise applications. Samsung is taking the lead in providing new lineups of products ?including the world's first hybrid drive ?that offer the highest capacities and the best performance to enable new applications."

FlashON MH80 Hybrid Hard Disk Drive
A world's first, Samsung's MH80 is a 2.5" hybrid hard drive with 256 megabytes of flash memory that is optimized to work in tandem with Windows Vista capable notebook PCs. It combines a hard disk drive with a OneNAND Flash cache and when used with Microsoft's ReadyDrive software, offers faster application launch speeds, faster boot and resume times, increased battery life and greater reliability compared to traditional magnetic media technology.

"The best way to understand the positioning of hybrid HDD technology is to think of it as the next revolutionary step in performance. First there was notebook 2.5" HDDs with 2MB DRAM caches. Then 8MB DRAM caches were introduced to improve performance. The 256MB flash memory cache included in Samsung's hybrid HDD technology is the next major step in performance for 2.5" HDDs," continued Higginbotham.

The MH80 hybrid hard drive leverages the high densities of magnetic storage technology, while the advanced NAND flash technology enhances the overall value with lowered power consumption, higher reliability and faster read/write access than traditional hard drives. The MH80 features Samsung's ReadyBoot technology that offers up to a 50 percent reduction in boot and resume times from traditional magnetic media technology. The 256MB flash memory stores frequently used data in a fast access cache allowing the HDD motor to be turned off a greater percent of time. With the HDD motor turned off, the MH80 hard drive consumes significantly less power than a traditional hard drive, and tests have shown this may extend notebook PC battery life by 25 minutes or more before a recharge is needed.

Another benefit of the MH80 operating a greater percentage of time with the motor switched off is this enhances the hard drive's reliability by dramatically reducing the duty cycle on the drive. Also when the MH80 motor is switched off, the drive parks its heads in a protective ramp. As a result, the drive is much less susceptible to shock damage, minimizing the possibility of data loss even under extreme conditions.

The MH80 hybrid hard drive is currently shipping with a $299 MSRP.

Storage News : SAMSUNG POWERS UP 2.5-INCH HARD DISK DRIVES FEATURING PMR TECHNOLOGY, INDUSTRY-LEADING FREE-FALL SENSORS AND INCREASED STORAGE CAPACITY

San Jose, CA – November 14, 2006 – Samsung Electronics Ltd., the worldwide digital consumer electronics and information technology forerunner, ratchets up the strength of its 2.5-inch hard disk drive offerings for notebook and enterprise computing applications with the introduction of the powerful new M80 SATA Series and M80 Series. Both series utilize advanced Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology, feature an optional industry leading free-fall sensors and offer increased storage capacity, now up to 160GB.

The M80 SATA Series features the 80GB HM080HI, the 120GB HM120II and 160GB HM160JI. The M80 Series includes the 80GB HM080HC, the 120GB HM120IC and the 160GB HM160JC*.

The M80 SATA Series and M80 Series are Samsung’s first hard drives based on PMR technology. Unlike traditional longitudinal recording technology, which lays data bits end to end where they can flip and corrupt data on the disc, PMR technology places the data bits perpendicular to the disc, which reduces the corruption factor. In addition, by placing the data bits standing on end, more data can fit onto a disc, allowing for greater storage capacity. With PMG technology, users can fit up to 40,000 MP3 songs and 160 hours of video on a 160GB Drive.

Samsung’s newest 2.5-inch drives offer users increased damage risk protection by incorporating industry-leading free-fall sensors. Many notebook hard drives on the market today have an operating shock tolerance – the amount of shock the drive can take before damage – up to 325G. Samsung’s new drives with the free-fall sensor provide an industry-leading 700G of operating shock tolerance. Hard drives enabled with the free-fall sensor are better able to detect changes in acceleration caused by a freefall. The free-fall sensor parks the drive’s head on the ramp and turns the hard drive off, protecting it from damage caused in a fall. This offers a dramatic increase in reliability and resistance to hard drive damage caused in the event of a fall.

Unlike much of its competition, Samsung’s free-fall sensors are located on the hard drive, not the notebook’s motherboard. The added benefits of this on-board integration include faster response time in the event of all fall, an improvement in the quality of fall detection, and a smaller minimum fall detection rate of just 30cm.

"The rate of today’s mobile workforce and notebook PC users is rapidly growing like never before and Samsung is committed to providing the most advanced, technically sophisticated hard drive solutions available today,” said Albert Kim, National Sales Manger, Storage Systems for Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. “The M80 SATA Series and M80 Series, armed with PMR technology, free-fall sensor capability and increased storage capacity work behind the senses to ensure users have all of the tools necessary for the most pleasurable computing experience possible.”

Targeted for mobile computing needs as well as enterprise applications, the M80 SATA Series and M80 Series feature a 8MB of onboard data cache and high performance 5,400rpm spindle speed. The new hard drives provide cutting-edge shock protection capability through an advanced mechanical platform and able-bodied cover design engineered to minimize the intensity of external shock transmitted to the most critical components of the drive.

Samsung’s latest 2.5-inch hard drive offers are equipped with the company’s Hybrid Latch System, a revolutionary new latch mechanism that eliminates unpleasant rattling noises and significantly reduces the clicking noise generated when a drive moves its heads on and off the disk according to the operating modes. The drive uses a Fluid Dynamic Bearing motor to achieve an industry-leading operating acoustic noise levels.

The M80 SATA Series and M80 Series feature 80GB formatted capacity per disk, Fluid Dynamic Bearing Spindle motor technology, ATA SMART feature set, ATA Automatic Acoustic Management, ATA Device Configuration overlay and Multi-Burst On-The-Fly Error Correction. Utilizing Samsung’s SilentSeek™ technology, the drives provide are among the quietest in the industry today. Storage News : SAMSUNG FIRST TO INTRODUCE 1.8-INCH HARD DRIVE WITH 60GBs ON A SINGLE DISK

San Jose, CA – January 25, 2007 - Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., the worldwide digital consumer electronics and information technology leader, has introduced the world’s first 1.8-inch hard drive with a 60GB1 per disk capacity and a super-slim form factor that is just 5-millimeters tall. Samsung’s sleek new 1.8-inch N-series features 20GB, 30GB, 40GB and 60GB per disk capacities – the largest one-disk storage capacity offered by any drive on the market today. Samsung’s 1.8-inch N-series is currently shipping.

Samsung’s new 60GB 1.8-inch hard disk can store data equivalent to 60 135-minute movies, 1,500 40MB music videos, or 15,000 4MB MP3 music files. Samsung’s 1.8-inch N-series hard disk drives are available in both internal and external HDD type.

Until now, two disks were required to reach a 60GB storage capacity in a 1.8-inch drive, which increased the height and size of the drive. Samsung’s N-series utilizes perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology to offer 60GBs on a single disk. As a result, Samsung is the first to offer a 60GB solution in the slimmest available 5-millimeter form factor. This makes the drive ideal for use in small portable media centers and mobile music devices.

Samsung’s 1.8-inch drives respond to the increasing demand for added capacity in smaller and smaller PC, mobile, and consumer electronics applications. Samsung’s N-series supports PATA(ZIF) as well as the new CE-ATA interface specifically designed for hard drives used in consumer electronics, MP3 players, portable media players, notebook PCs, UMPCs, car navigation systems, GPS and other digital consumer applications.

“Samsung is offering cutting-edge technology from an aerial density standpoint with the new 1.8-inch N-series. Given the same amount of hard drive space, Samsung is able to offer 60GB per disk where our competitors can only offer 40GB,” comments Albert Kim, national sales manager, Storage Systems for Samsung Semiconductor. “This enables us to produce more compact hard drives that will fit into smaller, more portable electronic devices.”

Samsung’s 1.8-inch hard drives are among the quietest on the market today, with just 1.8 Bel, a measurement of sound. As the sound level detectable by the human ear is 2 Bel this makes the operating sound of the new drives undetectable to the human ear. In addition, the N-series features ultra-low power consumption that is just .3 watts in low power idle.

Samsung’s N-series utilize PMR technology to achieve such a high level of storage capacity per disk.

Samsung’s 1.8-inch drives feature an ultra low power mobile SoC, a quiet and robust platform design, fast drive ready time, high efficient hybrid latch system, shock sensor and free fall sensor which is optional. All are equipped with a 4,200-rpm spindle speed, and 7.14-millisecond average seek time and a 2MB data buffer.

Benchmarking tests on sound power have shown that competing hard drives (80GB and 160GB models) generate on average 2.8 bel (1 bel = 10 decibels) in idle mode and 3.2 bel in seek mode, while Samsung’s S166 series generate just 2.4 bel and 2.75 bel respectively. This significant fifteen percent noise-level reduction makes the drives ideal for use in office computers, as well as in home consumer electronics such as DVR/ PVRs, or any other hard drive equipped products intended for use in a quiet environment.

In addition, three breakthrough technologies are implemented in the new S Series to enhance performance and reliability. An improved fly-height control technology ensures better read and write sensitivity by dynamically lowering the fly height in read or write mode while maintaining a consistent and high fly-height

across the disc in standard mode; an optimized actuator assembly for single-disk mechanism reinforces the reliability of the disk’s mechanical functions and improves the non operating and operating shock characteristics of the drive; and an upgraded system-on-chip (SoC) controller provides significant thermal, disk data transfer speed, and power consumption enhancements.

“Samsung is constantly pushing the technology envelope with the introduction of new and innovative products that meet the computing needs of today’s most demanding customers and operating environments,” states TJ Lee, vice president of sales & marketing at Samsung Electronics’ Storage System Division. “This latest technology development by Samsung in the new SpinPoint S166 Series makes our high-end, award-winning hard drive products attractive to a wider audience by even further reducing acoustic noise and improving disk data transfer speed.”

The S166 Series has a spin speed of 7,200rpm and provides an 8MB buffer. The Series features the SATA 3.0Gbps interface and includes Native Command Queuing (NCQ). The drives are also available with a PATA interface for customers who require this application.

With the new SpinPoint S166 series and recently introduced 2.5” hybrid hard disk drives and 1.8” hard drives, Samsung continues to expand its portfolio of advanced hard drives and technologies.

Pricing and market availability information will be provided on a regional basis.

Storage News : Samsung to Unveil First Commercial, Hybrid Hard Drive Prototype for Windows Vista at WinHEC

SAN JOSE, CA – May 17, 2006: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced that it is exhibiting the first commercial prototype of a Hybrid Hard Disk (HHD), the much-anticipated next generation hard drive for notebooks and PCs that integrates NAND flash memory with rotating magnetic storage. The HHD will be exhibited with two cache densities, 128MB and 256MB, at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in the Seattle, WA Conference Center (Samsung booth #419) May 23-24, 2006.“We see the HHD as the most advanced and cost-effective means of improving the performance of a notebook computer’s storage functionality,” said Jon Kang, senior vice president, technical marketing group, Samsung Semiconductor. “The Samsung HHD addresses the two biggest consumer desires: extending battery life and improving boot and resume performance.” The hybrid storage device leverages the benefits of both magnetic and solid state storage without compromising the cost of the computer housing it. The high densities of magnetic storage technology are preserved, while the exceptionally low power, high reliability and fast read/write access of advanced NAND flash technology enhance overall value at minimal additional cost. With an HHD, consumers receive a system that boots or resumes up to twice as fast as conventional HDDs, lasts 20-30 minutes longer on battery and is up to five times more reliable.“Hybrid hard disks and Windows ReadyDrive Technology are integrated advancements that improve the performance and reliability of computers using Windows Vista, especially notebook computers,” said Mike Sievert, corporate vice president, Windows Client Marketing at Microsoft. “We are very pleased to see Samsung moving so rapidly with HHD technology to prepare for high-volume production in time for the Windows Vista launch.” The Hybrid Hard Disk eliminates the need for the hard disk to constantly spin whenever a computer is operating on battery power, and is less susceptible to damage from jarring or being dropped since it is idle most of the time.Every time the cache is filled, the rotating drive spins to “flush out” or transfer data from the cache, spinning only a few seconds every 10-20 minutes. The Samsung HHD architecture uses the fastest flash device on the market as cache, Samsung’s OneNAND flash with 108MB/s read and 18 MB/s write data-rates. The functionality of the HHD is automated by the high performance HDD SOC which supports 3.0G Native Command Queuing SATA and an OneNAND interface. The HHD saves between eight and 25 seconds of boot-up time and extends battery life by about 8-10 percent depending on the model of computer. In addition, the HHD allows PC manufacturers to deploy value-added features, such as direct media experiences with instant-boot functionality and accelerated processing for specified applications.Samsung will sample its HHD with customers beginning next quarter and it will ship in large quantities by January, in conjunction with the Windows Vista rollout.About Samsung ElectronicsSamsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is a global leader in semiconductor, telecommunication, digital media and digital convergence technologies with 2005 parent company sales of US$56.7 billion and net income of US$7.5 billion. Storage News : SAMSUNG ANNOUNCES BLU RAY DISC DRIVE DEVELOPMENT COMPLETION

San Jose, CA –January 19, 2006 –TSST Korea (Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Corporation) announced today that it has completed the technical development of its Blu Ray Disc Drives. These revolutionary products for the Optical Disc Drive market offer a massive storage capacity up to 25GB at a single layer disc. “As a global technology leader, Samsung is always on the forefront of cutting-edge technologies, working to provide consumers with best-of-breed products” said Albert Kim, national sales manger, Storage Systems for Samsung SSI. “Samsung’s announcement of the completion of its Blu Ray disc drive is a major step ahead in the ODD technology battleground. “Better PerformanceThe demand for high-definition and large storage capacity is taking off and both Blu Ray and HD-DVD are next generation optical disc formats. In the Blu Ray drive, the Blue laser is the core factor that enables the next generation optical disc format. Current DVDs uses the red laser (650nm) to read and write data, while Blu Ray and HD-DVD use a shorter wavelength, blue laser (405nm). As a result, the Blu Ray beam can focus more precisely, enabling it to read information recorded in pits that are only 0.16 microns long, which is more than twice as small as the pits on a DVD. Also the smaller pit length allows for the storing of up to 25GB in a single layer disc -- about five times more than can be stored on a standard DVD disc. Elegant DesignThe enhanced design that was first incorporated into Samsung’s External DVD Writer is being adapted to the Blu Ray Drive as well. Samsung’s Blu Ray Drive has the sophisticated black and silver color design of a high-end A/V product that would look perfect even in a living room.More ApplicationsBlu Ray offers an outstanding 50GB of storage capacity on a double-layer disc (25GB on a single- layer disc). A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25GB, which can be used to record over 2 hours of HDTV or more than 13 hours of standard-definition TV. There are also dual-layer versions of the discs that can hold 50GB. Moreover, consumers can enjoy High Definition Blu Ray ROM movies at home, and record Digital Broadcast Programming. Like all the other Samsung ODD Drives, the Blu Ray drive is eco-friendly and supports Firmware Live Updates that allow users to ensure they always have the latest Blu Ray firmware version.Samsung Electronics is a member of Blu Ray Association and will launch internal and external Blu Ray drives simultaneously in 2006 under the Samsung Brand name through the Samsung Electronics distribution channel. San Jose, CA – February 27, 2006 – Samsung Electronics Ltd., the worldwide digital consumer electronics and information technology leader, announces its fastest dual layered DVD recorder. The new SH-W162L is a unique LightScribeÔ, enabling 16x DVD re-writeable drive with 8x dual speed recording. LightScribe technology is embedded in the DVD drive and lets users engrave labels, photos, and designs right onto the CD and DVD discs with no hassle at all. The result is a professional look with no worries about labels falling off or sloppy marker smudges. The drive’s label making software is pre-loaded with an array of designs and labels for users who choose not to create their own label. “As a storage technology leader, Samsung’s SH-W162L offers consumers two improved technologies combined into one affordable product: the ability to print text, photos or whatever design a user wishes directly onto discs, and the leap in dual speed recording time,” comments Albert Kim, National Sales Manager, Storage Systems for Samsung SSI.In addition to the LightScribe technology, the SH-W162L offers a super-fast 8X dual-layer speed recording and storage of up to 8.5GBs of data.
